It’s official - walkers are welcome in Stroud.
The town council supported an application for Stroud to become a national Walkers are Welcome town.
The status helps ensures that footpaths and facilities for walkers are maintained in good condition.
“With the Stroud Walking Festival starting on September 2 the timing couldn’t be better,” said John Marjoram, Stroud town mayor.
“This project will also be a great benefit to the residents of Stroud as we should enjoy the great walks on our doorsteps as much as our visitors.”
The council set aside funding to support walking in the town and helped collect the 250 signatures need to demonstrate community backing for the idea.
"As Stroud now hosts one of the leading walking festivals, it is great for the town to have also attained the Walkers are Welcome status,” said festival director Bernard Wakefield-Heath.
"We have spectacular countryside and fantastic walks on our doorstep and around the surrounding five valleys. We welcome all walkers wanting to explore more of what we have to offer here, and there's no better time to start than with our walking festival in September."
The town council also published a Walks around Stroud leaflet which is available from the town council offices in London Road and online.
