Town Council contributes to Fringe success

Stroud Fringe Festival was a resounding success and organisers are planning bigger and better things for 2012.
Jeremy Collingwood, chairman of the Fringe, revealed the news at a Stroud Town Council meeting.
The town council is the principle sponsor of the two-day festival, giving it a £5,000 grant.
Mr Collingwood said the festival finished with a £600 surplus, thanks to the town council grant, profits from the bar and an increase in sponsorship.
“The festival was very successful and we have made great strides considering three years ago we were struggling and had to cancel a year,” said Mr Collingwood.
The most popular aspect of the festival was the family activities in Bank Gardens on the Saturday.
“Stroud is always buzzing on the Saturday and we want to try to bring the town alive on the Sunday so that people come into the centre and enjoy themselves,” he said.
Organisers hope to provide more events on Sunday to attract visitors. “We are attempting to run three stages on the Sunday to maximise ‘empty’ Stroud and bring a new day’s trade to the town,” said Mr Collingwood.
“We want to try and grow the festival. Without the support of Stroud Town Council we would be sunk.”
