Town council appeals for old books on Stroud

Stroud mayor John Marjoram is appealing for people to help him safeguard the history of the town.
He wants to set up an archive of historical material at the town council offices in London Road.
“People need to know the history of Stroud and that can be from hundreds of years ago or just 40 years ago. It is important that we keep a record of our past for today and for future generations,” said Mr Marjoram.
The town council is appealing for donations of books, postcards and photographs which relate to Stroud’s past. They can be offered to the council on a long-term loan.
“We will take great care of any loaned material we receive. We feel that while there are organisations gathering historical information on the district that there is no one concentrating on the town,” said Mr Marjoram.
Mr Marjoram has already received some donated books including a copy of Stroud Valley Illustrated packed with advertisements from the 1940s.
Donations to the archive can be dropped off at the town council office which is open Monday-Thursday 10am-1.30pm and Friday, from 9.30am-12.30pm
