Shop in Stroud website launched Print E-mail

sis3_-_amended.jpgA new website has been launched as part of the campaign to encourge even more people to Shop Local.  The website www.shopinstroud.com has a full online directory of town traders and products as well as the latest news, events and promotions.

The new initiative is managed by the town's Chamber of Trade whose vice-chair Sabrina Pace-Humphreys commented: "At a time when the prevalence of chain stores has turned many of Britain’s High Streets into soulless copies of each other, Stroud is a welcome relief, offering a unique shopping experience unrivalled by any town or city in the locality."

"Where else would you find a specialist fairy store as you shopped for your weekly groceries, or stumble across a fossil shop as you sauntered through the streets? Boasting not one but two independent record shops – a rare occurrence even in cities – and a whole host of wonderful shops you won’t find anywhere else, Stroud really does have something for everyone."

fairtrade_directory_launch_web.jpgThe Town Council has been fully behind the Shop Local campaign from the start and is a major funder of town centre events, initiatrives and improvements. Town Mayor Andy Read (pictured left at the town's weekly Farmers Market) said: "It's fantastic to see such partnership working going on between traders in our town. This is exactly the sort of innovative idea that will continue to set Stroud apart from the clone towns we see elsewhere."

Celebrate the centenary of Uplands Church Print E-mail

uplands_church_all.jpgCelebrations to mark the centenary of one of England's most notable Edwardian churches were launched with a unique event on January 3rd. All Saints Church in Uplands was designed by Temple Moore, and consecrated on 11th May 1910.

The Church Council is arranging a series of events during the year focussing on the actual anniversary of the consecration in May and All Saints Tide at the beginning of November.

The first event was held on the first Sunday in 2010, January 3rd. At the 11am "Saints Alive" - the first Sunday informal service with a special focus on children and young families - the church witnessed the lighting of 100 flames.

Stroud Mayor Andy Read (above), whose home is within sight of the church, lit the first of the 100 candles to celebrate the birthday of one of Stroud's most important community buildings.

uplands_cent_kids.jpgEvents will be held throughout the year to mark the anniversary including a special service for couples who have been married in the church over the years and a special annivesary concert on October 21st. Programmes are available from the church which will also host an illustrated talk on its architect, Temple Moore on Thursday February 18th at 7.30pm. Tickets £5 on the door.

Hawkwood College is hosting an event connected to the centenary in conjunction with The Betjeman Society. John Betjeman (1906-84 & Poet Laureate from 1972) loved architecture and knew the Uplands church. Local community figure Pamela Tawse has pulled an event together, supported by local film maker Jonathan Stedall.  The event runs from October 19th-22nd with a concert in the church on Thursday 21st. The flyer below has full information.
