Stroud Arts Festival presents Relaxed Opera for Everyone

Sun, 22 Oct 2023 14:00

Stroud Arts Festival presents

Relaxed Opera for Everyone

Stroud Arts Festival is dedicated to bringing the arts to people of any age and background. Some people find it difficult to attend traditional performances of classical music and opera, so we are delighted to announce two relaxed performances of a wonderful new production, created by our own, unique ensemble of professional singers and musicians.

This year we are creating a musical adventure of magic and mystery, taking the participants on an interactive, journey. At each step, performers (and the audience get the opportunity to join in too!) work with musical instruments, items of clothing, sounds and other sensory tools, to connect people with places and cultures, unlocking dances from around the world. There are 2 performances – 2pm and 3.30pm – each with a maximum audience size of 40 in the spacious Ballroom, so plenty of space to move around. There will also be a quiet space in an adjacent room should anyone feel the need to go out of the show. And of course you'll be able to come back in again!

There are 2 one-hour shows 2pm-3pm and 3.30pm-4.30pm

These shows are free to all, but places are limited so booking is essential

Stroud Arts Festival presents Bristol Ensemble – Dark Side of the Moon 50th Anniversary Concert

Wed, 25 Oct 2023 19:00

Stroud Arts Festival presents

Bristol Ensemble – Dark Side of the Moon 50th Anniversary Concert

In March 1973, Gilmour, Waters, Mason and Wright released what was to become the fourth most successful album of all time. Dark side of the Moon spent over 1,000 weeks in the Billboard charts and has sold 45 m copies worldwide. Rich, lush and multi-layered, it could have been designed for an orchestral treatment. With great joy, therefore, we welcome the Bristol Ensemble as they deliver a specially commissioned arrangement of this progressive rock classic in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

Bristol's only professional chamber orchestra, the 17-piece Bristol Ensemble is as comfortable with Vivaldi as with the virtuoso rock of Pink Floyd. This guaranteed exhilarating one-hour concert also includes music from Einaudi and Debussy.

There are 2 performances – 7pm and 9pm

Stroud Arts Festival presents The London Tango Quintet

Fri, 27 Oct 2023 19:30

Stroud Arts Festival presents

The London Tango Quintet

The London Tango Quintet, drawn together by a love of the tango, first formed in 2007 and has gained international acclaim for its performances of music by legendary Argentinian composer Astor Piazzola, interspersed with music from the baroque to the contemporary. Founder and director David Juritz, describing the first time he heard Piazolla's music, says "It was mind-blowing. A kaleidoscope of conflicting emotions and a raw energy I've never heard surpassed in any other kind of music."

Chart topping guitar virtuoso, Craig Ogden, is joined by accordionist, Miloš Milivojević, described by the Times as 'a hurricane of musical invention'. Pianist/composer David Gordon tours as a jazz musician, harpsichordist and director of internationally renowned ensembles while bassist, Richard Pryce, works with artists from Jamie Cullum to Shirley Bassey. Violinist and founder of the quintet, David Juritz, made headlines when he busked around around the world for charity. His playing has been described as having a quality of 'aching lyricism…naked expression in the grip of an icy control'.

Come and share the passion of the tango with these 5 superbly talented musicians – and we promise to give you at least one opportunity to get up on your feet!

Stroud Arts Festival presents Will Todd’s Mass In Blue and Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concert

Sat, 28 Oct 2023 19:00

Stroud Arts Festival presents

Will Todd's Mass In Blue and Duke Ellington's Sacred Concert

A wonderful evening to celebrate two composers whose skill of weaving choral and jazz together brings us an exciting and inspiring night of sacred music.

Duke Ellington's Sacred Concert

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (1899 – 1974) was a true giant of the Jazz Age and beyond whose influence has continued through generations of jazz musicians. Always a religious man, Ellington wrote Three Sacred Concerts in the 1960s claiming that they were "personal, not career" and that they are 'the most important thing I have ever done'

Conducted by Paul McLaughlin. Joined by the fantastic soprano, Nina Bennet and dancer Luc Bailey, the uplifting music of Duke Ellington perfectly complements Will Todd's beautiful and exciting setting of the mass.

Will Todd's Mass in Blue

Another sacred work in a jazz style, this time by a contemporary composer, Mass in Blue is an upbeat jazz setting of the latin mass text blending jazz and classical choral singing to stunning effect. With a soprano soloist and a choir drawn from the community, this is a vibrant, colourful work celebrating its 20th anniversary and performed for us by the composer and his ensemble.

The evening starts at 7pm with Will Todd in conversation with Paul McLaughlin. An opportunity to hear a composer discussing his work and inspiration before the performance.

COME AND SING! A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO SING THE MASS IN BLUE WITH THE COMPOSER
Calling all singers! Will Todd strongly believes in music making for all, and his personal motto when directing choirs is 'find the passion'. This is a unique and brilliant opportunity to work on a choral masterpiece with the composer and his ensemble. Register your interest in joining the choir.
